Who We Serve:
We provide literacy services to adults, teens, and families. We help people from all over the world learn English and we also help native English speakers motivated to improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. All of our services (any combination of classes, one-to-one tutoring, and attendance at drop-in hours) are available to our learners depending on their literacy levels and their stated needs and goals. We charge our learners $25 per year. This fee can be waived or paid on an installment plan as needed. No documentation is required to learn at our Center.
Tutoring and Classes:
Drop-in Tutoring: This occurs at our Center where we have computers and a wide range of literacy materials available. Volunteers staff this program on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3-7 pm. Learners can stop in without an appointment and receive immediate literacy support.
One-to-One Tutoring: TLC matches volunteers with learners who have specific educational goals that are best achieved through a personalized program of study. Learners and tutors meet as their schedule permits at TLC or at other community locations.
Center Classes: Classes at TLC cover a variety of topics including Reading, Writing, Speaking, Pronunication, Pre-GED Topics (Reading, Writing, and Math), English as a Second Language, Citizenship, and Family Literacy.
Community Classes: TLC volunteer tutors teach classes at several locations in the community, including the Family Resource Center, Kinsey Elementary School, and Killip Elementary School. All of these classes focus on English as a Second Language.
Family Literacy: TLC has drop-in hours for families at TLC on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3-5 pm. We have books and other literacy materials to give away, trained family literacy tutors to provide guidance and ideas about how to support literacy development in children, and a play area.
