How do I become a volunteer?

First, attend an Orientation. Then, decide if you want to be an instructional or non-instructional volunteer.

Instructional Volunteers will go through extensive Tutor Training prior to becoming a Literacy Tutor. Our trainers use hands-on methods to train volunteers for tutoring and teaching in various topic areas. Because our learners are teens and adults, we prefer that our tutors be 18 years or older.

Non-Instructional Volunteers will go through specific training related to their selected volunteer opportunity.

Who are the learners?

Our learners come from all walks of life and from many countries. They are teens and adults who wish to develop basic skills in reading, writing, and conversational English. Some learners have spoken English all their lives, but have not developed the reading and writing skills required to function in our society. Other learners did not grow up speaking English, but wish to develop English language skills.

How much time am I required to commit to volunteering?

This depends on the type of volunteer opportunity you chose and your availability. We try to accommodate everyone with
a genuine interest.
