Opportunities and Programs

The Literacy Center has a diversity of volunteer opportunities. All of our programs are delivered by our highly trained literacy volunteers. In addition, we have a variety of non-instructional ways for you to support our work.

Programs:

Drop-in Tutoring: This occurs at our Center where we have computers and a wide range of literacy materials available. Volunteers staff this program on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3-7 pm. Learners can stop in without an appointment and receive immediate literacy support.

One-to-One Tutoring: TLC matches volunteers with learners who have specific educational goals that are best achieved through a personalized program of study. Learners and tutors meet as their schedule permits at TLC or at other community locations.

Center Classes: Classes at TLC cover a variety of topics including Reading, Writing, Speaking, Pronunciation, Pre-GED Topics, ESL, Citizenship, and Family Literacy.

Community Classes: TLC volunteer tutors teach classes at several locations in the community, including the Family Resource Center, Kinsey Elementary School, and Killip Elementary School. In addition, tutors provide basic literacy and employment literacy drop-in hours at Flagstaff Shelter Services.

Partnership for Literacy Rehabilitation (PLR): Tutors offer classes once a week to inmates in the Coconino County Jail. In the jail, volunteer instructors focus on helping learners develop employment literacy skills and provide programming on literature and the arts. Tutors also do one-to-one literacy assessments and tutoring at the jail. This program requires that tutors undergo training with the jail and with TLC. Click here for more information.

Family Literacy: TLC recently expanded its programs to include family literacy. We offer drop-in hours for families at TLC from 3-5 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
